The condition of an old woman's home | Mirror
An elderly woman who drifted away from the outside world
after her father died almost dying from the cold until she was rescued by
volunteers.
70-year-old Sandra Burton lives in Royston, Cambridge
lives without water and electricity in a house with scattered rubbish.
Sandra suffers from depression and becomes socially
isolated after losing her father who is the only family she has.
About three years ago the toilet leaked but he was too
embarrassed to ask people to fix it or let someone visit because his house is
very messy.
Electricity at home is also problematic. For two years
Sandra lived without water, heating or even a decent electric light for her.
The social worker comes to check on his house, but he
will always drive them out of embarrassment with his home.
After Sandra held a routine meeting with general
practitioner Diane Walters at Granta medical surgery, it was noticed that
something was wrong with Sandra.
Diane said that she knew Sandra for about three years and
met her for a routine meeting.
Then Diane was conscious of Sandra's misery, moreover her
weight dropped.
In December 2016, Sandra was seriously ill with
pneumonia, probably because of the fungus that grows in her home.
Diane was so worried about Sandra that she visited her
flat after successfully persuading Sandra to be allowed in.
Sandra's home was the worst she'd ever seen. Diane had
been a district nurse in Royston from 1978 to 1984 and had never seen anyone
live in a condition like the natural Sandra.
It's very cold there, the air is damp and stuffy.
The floor is full of plastic water bottles, rubbish, like
a sea of garbage.
There was no light, TV or a place for Sandra to sleep
well.
Sandra sat in a chair with light only from matches.
There is no food that can be eaten by Sandra. He looked
embarrassed by his condition, thin and weak.
Sandra says no one has been in her house for years.
The front door lock was broken and he was afraid to leave
his house unlocked, for that he had no food.
Sandra could have starved or chilled to death in just a
few days with her condition.
After Sandra was persuaded, Diane finally called the
social worker so they started repairing and cleaning Sandra's house.
The volunteers also raise funds to help Sandra.
