In
Indonesia, banana leaves are often used to wrap food, especially market snacks.
Besides being practical and safe, it turns out wrapping with banana leaves can
also make food more flavorful.
In addition,
using banana leaves as a base for food is also much healthier because it
contains polyphenols, which are natural antioxidants to fight free radicals and
prevent disease. Banana leaves as a food wrap can help food absorb polyphenols
from the leaves so that the nutrients increase. Banana leaves also have
antibacterial properties that can kill germs so they are more hygienic.
Using banana
leaves is also more environmentally friendly. Banana leaves are very easy to
break down in a short time, unlike plastic that takes hundreds of years to
decompose.
Seeing the
enormous benefits of using banana leaves, especially for the environment, made
several supermarkets in Thailand in early March using banana leaves to wrap
fresh products. After Thailand, large supermarket chains such as Lotte Mart and
Saigon Co. in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam also adopted the method.
According to
the Tuoi Tre News report, as quoted by World of Buzz, Saigon Co.op revealed
plans to gradually replace biodegradable packaging (which can be decomposed)
with banana leaves throughout the Co.opmart supermarket, hypermarket Coop Xtra,
Co.op Food shop , and Co.op Smiles shop.
In addition,
Big C supermarkets have also implemented the new packaging method in all of
their outlets in central and southern Vietnam on April 3, 2019.
Previously,
Big C used environmentally friendly packaging made from corn powder.
According to
Vice News, a representative from Lotte Mart stated that they plan to implement
this packaging nationally in the near future. This news comes in light of the
fact that Vietnam is ranked as the fourth largest plastic waste producer dumped
into the sea.
