Said HELP from Colen Nulgit and his girlfriend Shantelle Johnson (CNN Travel)
Darwin - A
pair of lovers rescued from an Australian outback after writing the word 'HELP'
in mud. This meaningful word of help request caught the attention of the search
crew.
Colen Nulgit
(20) and his girlfriend Shantelle Johnson (18) went fishing on Sunday on a
river in the Keep River National Park in the Northern Territory near the border
with Western Australia. There are saltwater crocodiles in all waterways or
rivers around the park, according to the Northern Territory government.
But Nulgit
said, on their day fishing turned into a place to stay overnight. They could
not sleep because the vehicle was trapped in the mud.
Reported by
CNN Travel, Thursday (04/25/2019), Nulgit said they had seen traces of
crocodiles in the area before. And, when the water rises and the sun sets, they
are increasingly afraid of being swept away by the big waves or attacked by
crocodiles or dingo.
"Crocodiles
here, they are not afraid of humans, they are not afraid of anything. Food food
for them. Whatever it is," he said.
In their
home town of Kununurra, a 1.5-hour drive from the national park, Johnson's
mother called the police when they could not return that night. Then, Nulgit
said they huddled under a sheet of cloth in the car, unable to sleep.
They wrote
the word 'HELP' in large capital letters in dry mud with fence posts around
04.00 on Monday (4/15). They hope to attract attention from the passing
aircraft.

But Nulgit
claimed to be worried if stranded for a long time. Luckily, Kununurra police coordinated
a search group using a plane from a local company to find the couple.
Nulgit said
he and Johnson lit a fire after they heard the plane to help attract attention.
After 26 hours, they finally survived!
"If
they don't start a fire and tell family members the details of when they left
and the estimated time to go home, the couple may not have been found,"
the police said in a statement.
Nulgit said
the adventure would not prevent them from venturing again. On other days they
must have equipment that they did not have before.
"I am
only grateful for all the people who came to help and came out to look for us.
We are lucky to survive and get out of it," he said.
