A video showing a group of people cycling on the road circulated on social media Twitter. Something different, in the video uploaded to the @semestasains account on Saturday (8/22/2020), one of the cyclists suddenly changed his bicycle style.

The cyclist is no longer pedaling his bicycle, but instead slumps over on the saddle of the bicycle, much like the superhero character Superman is flying. Although not pedaled, the bicycle he was riding on actually went faster and overtook the other cyclists. The video has been liked by more than 5,100 Twitter users and commented on by 1,500 netizens.

Some netizens who commented said that this phenomenon could occur because the cyclist was crossing the downhill road, so that it could go faster. Account

@semestasains said that this happened because the Superman-style cyclist went faster because he understood the basic laws of aerodynamics. However, is that true?

Explanation of Physicist Professor of Theoretical Physics of FMIPA-IPB, Husin Alatas, said that the Superman-style cyclist can be faster because the air pressure between the front and rear of the bicycle becomes smaller. Cyclists who position themselves horizontally, he said, reduce air drag.

Husin said this was possible because the airflow around the bicycle and the cyclist's body was relatively not much difference between the front of the bike and the back. "Based on the observed phenomenon, it appears that a large reduction in air drag significantly changes the momentum of the bicycle," said Husin when contacted by Kompas.com.

"Even though the bicycle is no longer pedaled and the torque forces that contribute to wheel rotation only come from the gravitational force due to the slope of the road," he added.

In physics, the quantity of motion is determined by a quantity called momentum, which depends on the mass of the bicycle plus the cyclist, as well as the speed.

Husin explained that the momentum of the bicycle is influenced by the forces acting on it.

There are several forces that work, including the gravitational force due to the downhill road, the thrust from the cyclist, the air drag which is influenced by the bicycle structure and the body position of the cyclist, and the friction between the bicycle and the road.

"Particularly with air drag, it appears because of the difference in air pressure at the front which is bigger than the rear of the bicycle due to the difference in air density between the two parts," said Husin.
