11 Students of MTs Ciamis Died by Drowning During River Crossing Activities

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bandung Basarnas Office stated that 11 MTs Harapan Baru students died as a result of drowning during the Cileueur River crossing, Cijeungjing District, Ciamis Regency, West Java, on Friday night.

Head of the Bandung Basarnas Office, Deden Ridwansah, confirmed that his party had evacuated the survivors and those who died in the incident.

"Students at MTs Harapan Baru Ciamis were doing a river crossing to clean the river, suddenly several students drowned," he said, quoted from Antara, October 15, 2021.

Based on a report received by Basarnas Bandung, the activity involved 150 students for activities along the river in Wetan Hamlet, Utama Village, Cijeunjing District, Ciamis.

Joint officers are still at the scene to be on standby to conduct a search, equipped with equipment for river rescue.

"Currently the team is still at the scene to anticipate reports and developments from the committee and the victim's family," said Deden Ridwansah.

According to the latest report, the number of victims who were successfully evacuated was 21, consisting of 10 survivors and 11 people dying from drowning.

According to Jeje, Farid Prima's nickname, he has been using the Koi pond for 9 months as a fence for his house. The fence with the aquarium concept is 16 meters long, with a width of 1.10 meters, costing tens of millions of rupiah.

"The glass is 12 millimeters thick, there are four aquariums for the fence, each 2.14 meters long," said Jeje when met at his residence, Thursday (23/9/2021).

To make a Koi pond fence, Jeje has spent almost Rp 50 million. There are 80 Koi fish of various types that fill the pond fence. "If the cost runs out Rp 50 million," he said.

Jeje said that he had been a hobbyist for Koi fish for a dozen years. Jeje has a large collection of various types of Koi fish that are quite loved by Koi hobbyists. "I've been a Koi fish hobby for a long time. As soon as I wanted to dismantle the fence, this idea came up, then just made a Koi pond," explained Jeje.

Jeje said that it took about two months to complete the Koi pond fence. There are various types of Koi fish with prices ranging from Rp. 350 thousand to Rp. 5 million. “After the pool process is complete, all you have to do is prepare the water. Because for Koi fish, the water conditions must be really mature or ready, “he explained.

"For koi, it's enough. Because the length is more than one meter. We also equip an aerator for aquarium oxygen," he continued.

Museum of Plastic Waste in Gresik Reminds Indonesia of Environmental Problems

Environmental activists in Indonesia are trying to raise awareness about the severity of plastic waste in the world by building a museum in Gresik, East Java, which is made from plastic waste.

Visitors who enter the museum are invited to rethink their habits in disposing of plastic waste, as well as an invitation to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags and plastic bottles.

This museum was created in three months with the raw materials of more than 10 thousand plastic waste, such as bottles, bags, straws, and packaging which are all made of plastic.

To find the material is not difficult, because all the ingredients are obtained from rivers and beaches that are contaminated with plastic waste.

The main work exhibited in this museum is the statue of "Dewi Sri", a symbol of the fertility goddess who is widely worshiped by the Javanese people.

Dewi Sri wears clothes made from plastic packaging in the form of 'sachets', which are usually used to package spices that are only used once.

"We want to convey a message to residents to stop using single-use plastic," said Prigi Arisandi, the museum's founder.

"These plastics are very difficult to recycle. Starting today, we must stop using single-use plastics, as they pollute our oceans, which are a source of food for all of us."

The problem of plastic waste has long been a big problem in Indonesia.

Regarding plastic waste being dumped into the sea, Indonesia is in second place after China.

Together with the Philippines and Vietnam, China and Indonesia contribute more than 50 percent of plastic waste that ends up in the ocean.

Indonesia's efforts to recycle plastic waste have not shown significant results, as evidenced by the increasing production of plastic waste.

The museum from plastic waste in Gresik has been visited by 400 people since it was first opened in early September.

Ahmad Zainuri, a student who came to the museum, said that this exhibition opened his eyes to the problem of plastic waste facing the world today.

"I will use a cloth bag, and if I buy a drink, I will bring my own bottle," he said.

"I will buy things that can be reused, such as drinking bottles, instead of plastic bottles," said Ayu Chandra Wulan, another student.

"Seeing so much trash here, I feel sad."

The museum has also become popular for them to take 'selfies' against the backdrop of thousands of hanging plastic bottles, which they share on social networks.
