A new species of insect was discovered by a boy named Davis Marthin Damaledo from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). He is in the spotlight after discovering a new species of insect that has never been identified before.
His name is now immortalized in a scientific publication entitled Nesiophasma sobesonbaaii n. sp. -a new giant stick insect from the island of Timor, Indonesia (Insecta: Phasmatodea) published last March 2023. As reported by various sources, Thursday (28/12/2023), the new insect species found by Davis has a twig-like shape. The color is bright green with a fairly large size, about 20cm.
The insect was discovered by Davis in 2021. At that time, Davis, who had been collecting insects since childhood, found it perched on a guava tree in Oemasi Village, Kupang, NTT.
Davis then took the unique insect home and enlisted the help of his fellow insect hobbyist, Garda Bagus Damastra to identify it. Unfortunately, both found a dead end.
Garga only managed to find out the genus, namely Nesiophasma. Garda then enlisted the help of Canadian insect researcher Frank H. Hennemann to conduct further identification by sending the insect to Canada.
The identification results said that the twig insect found by Davis was a new species. Davis and Garda were involved in the research and named the new specification Nesiophasma Sobesonbaaii.
The name Sobesonbaaii itself is taken from the national hero from NTT, Sobe Sonbai III. With his findings, Davis and his colleague who also helped, Garda are in the ranks of world-class authors of scientific publications.
